It's World Mental Health Day! 

The theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day, on 10 October, is “young people and mental health in a changing world”. The focus is on building mental resilience among young people, to help them cope with the challenges of today’s world. To help support this year's campaign, Mental Health First Aid England have produced resources to help schools to promote positive mental health in their settings.

New Look Life Hacks Resources Launched

To mark this Year's World Mental Health Day Public Health are sending out set of the new Life Hacks posters to all secondary and middle school settings. Somerset County Council's young people's participation team, The Unstoppables, have been working hard to improve the Life Hacks posters and resources. The vibrant new look posters are available in A3 been updated to include a folding postcard version with the same young people friendly ideas for supporting yourself or a friend with their mental health and wellbeing.

Self Harm Training for Schools 

As part of the Somerset Wellbeing Framework, Public Health has commissioned a programme of bite-size mental health training sessions delivered by the Educational Psychology Team. The sessions will be available in all areas and delivered throughout the academic year. The first of these is on the topic of self-harm.

Exciting Programme of LIFEbeat Training on Offer - PSHE CPD & Relationships Day  

LIFEbeat are providing some great training opportunities this year to help schools adopt a whole school approach to emotional health and wellbeing. LIFEbeat are key partners in the development of the Somerset Wellbeing Framework and have produced a programme of courses that link to the key principles of a mentally healthy school and the Pillars of Wellbeing.

Somerset Children and Young People Survey 2018 

In March 2018, Public Health commissioned the School Health Education Unit (SHEU) to run a third online children’s health and wellbeing survey in schools and colleges across Somerset. A total of 7302 pupils and students took part in 74 infant and primary and 26 middle and secondary schools in Somerset. 

Key headlines linked to mental health and Wellbeing:

  • Somerset primary pupils are more likely to worry about the environment, crime and health issues in 2018 compared with 2014.
  • Somerset secondary pupils are more likely to worry about exams and tests and mental health in 2018 compared with 2014.
