Compulsory Health Education - New Draft Guidance & Consultation Published

All schools will teach children about good physical and mental health, how to stay safe offline and the importance of healthy relationships under bold new plans published by Education Secretary Damian Hinds.

Exciting Programme of LIFEbeat Training on offer - PSHE CPD & 2 Day Creative Practice

LIFEbeat are providing some great training opportunities this year to help schools adopt a whole school approach to emotional health and wellbeing. LIFEbeat are key partners in the development of the Somerset Wellbeing Framework and have produced a programme of courses that link to the key principles of a mentally healthy school and the Pillars of Wellbeing.

Free Farm Visits Available at Frogmary Green Farm

New dates are now available for schools to visit Frogmary Green Farm which now includes a purpose build classroom - The SHED (Schools' Health Education Den). The farm caters for all age groups and visits can include educational sessions on crops, machinery, chickens, renewable energy, growing and cooking.

Emotion Coaching - Training for Teaching Staff (All phases)

Somerset Emotion Coaching is a key feature of the Somerset Wellbeing Framework and training dates are now available for SLT, SENCO and classroom teachers in all phases. The training will provide staff with techniques and understanding on the key elements of Emotion Coaching including: Dan Siegel's hand-model, John Gottman's 5 steps of Emotion Coaching and how these can support behaviour, wellbeing and staff self-care and resilience.

New LIFEHACKS Resources for Supporting Mental Health

Somerset County Council's young people's participation team, The Unstoppables, have been working hard to improve the LifeHacks posters and resources. The vibrant new look posters are available in A3 and will be sent out to schools during the autumn term. The resources have also been updated to include a folding postcard version with the same young people friendly ideas for supporting yourself or a friend with their mental health and wellbeing.

Young Parent Study Day 2018 - Impact of Poverty

The Young Parent Programme Health Visitor Team are running an event this autumn highlighting the needs and best practice work the team are delivering to young parents in Somerset. Schools are invited to attend to help raise awareness of this group whose experience of school, and their role as future parents of school-age children, should help inform policy and planning around Relationships Education, PSHE & pastoral work in school.

Domestic Abuse Training Available for Primary Settings

Somerset Integrated Domestic Abuse Service (SIDAS) is offering free training to primary schools. The theme of the training is “The impact of domestic abuse and how to use a trauma informed approach to support children and young people”.  The training is free for all primary settings in Somerset.
