Planning your Mental Wellbeing Curriculum

 

 

 

Policy 

 

Mental wellbeing education falls into the physical health and mental wellbeing part of the RSHE curriculum. It's a statutory requirement to teach this topic to both primary and secondary learners using an age appropriate approach.

 

The PSHE Association (funded by DfE) offers guidance and lesson packs on teaching about mental health and emotional wellbeing KS1 - KS4.

 

The physical health and mental wellbeing part of the curriculum also covers internet safety and harms (see below), online and media is covered under Relationships and Sex Education (see planning your relationships education).  Drugs, alcohol and tobacco is also covered in this section of the curriculum (see planning your drugs alcohol and tobacco education).

Training 

 

Details of current emotional, mental health and wellbeing training available for Somerset education staff and the children and young peoples workforce are available on Public Health Training Menu.

 

Other providers include: 

NSPCC - protecting children from bullying and cyberbullying, online learning for professionals or parents / carers.

 

NSPCC and CEOP - online safety training , low cost training for school staff.

Mental wellbeing and psychical health are interlinked, its important that learners understand how they both contribute.

 

Resources are available on the Lifestyles Toolkit (teaching about body image and the Mental Health Toolkit (understanding body image, eating problems and disorders) to support teaching in these areas.
