As children and young people spend so much of their time at school it is vit

ally important that there is confidence within the school staff members regarding chronic conditions such as asthma.  For asthma this includes

Do you know the impact of poorly Controlled Asthma at School?

 

• Tiredness resulting from their asthma symptoms.

• Absenteeism related to intercurrent asthma episodes at home, GP and hospital clinic appointments and hospitalisations with asthma attacks.

• Exam stress is an asthma trigger and a risk factor in dropping a grade between mock and final exams. 
• September Spike! Every September, more children are rushed to hospital due to their asthma than at any other time of the year.

• Improve asthma awareness and management in the school
• Improve support to students with asthma encouraging an inclusive environment
• Support responsibilities for the health, safety and wellbeing of students and staff
• Ensure the school is implementing current and best practice asthma management strategies
• Enable the school to promote its self-evaluated status to ensure that the community is aware of the school's commitment to Asthma Friendly strategies.

School staff Asthma Training

All staff members are expected to undertake an annual asthma awareness training with a minimum of 85% of staff trained to achieve Asthma Friendly School status.

Every school will meet Asthma Friendly School standards including:

• A current asthma policy
• A register of all Children and Young People in the school with asthma
• Children will have immediate access to their own inhaler and spacer
• Schools will have an emergency inhaler and spacer.
