Somerset 'Water Schools' Initiative

The Somerset Water Schools initiative was launched last year at Bridgwater College Academy:

Following the launch Helen Stone at Bridgwater College Academy explained:

Everyone was so positive about the media coverage for the school, we don’t often get positive news stories so it was a real confidence boost for the children. And now we can say to our juice drinkers, ‘we can’t be on TV saying we’re a water school if we’re not drinking water!’ The launch day was definitely the best way to start the new initiative in my opinion, hopefully other schools will follow suit."

The Healthier Lifestyle Team at Somerset Council is encouraging primary schools across the county to take on the Water Schools approach, based on the initiative developed in primary schools in Vienna -

Drinking Water in Primary schools case studies - Water schools Vienna (Austria).

The initiative is based on three main principles
  • Pupils only drink tap water while at school.

  • Parents do not need to provide drinks from home.

  • Teachers encourage children to drink water during the day.

All of the materials required to implement the initiative within your school can be found on this page.
